A Day of Tournaments, Fine Arts, Feasting, & Merriment
Last year, Master Julien de LaPointe bested all others and become our current Champeen o’ Love, winning the coveted pink baldric and the admiration of the Ladies of the Gallery. Who will come forward to challenge Master Julien this year? Verily, it is time to once again meet mid winter to fight, fence, and make merry.
Fencing, Rattan, and Arts and Sciences competitions are the hallmarks of this tournament. Participants of the tourney may enter and win one or more categories. However, the Pink Baldric will be awarded to the gentle who excels in all three and displays that which the Ladies of the Gallery feel exemplifies a true Champion of Love. The whim of the Ladies of the Gallery may very well weigh heavily on the outcome of the tournament; after all, this is the Tourney of Love.
This year, the Arts and Sciences competition has a theme – Deck the Halls! Though you may enter anything you wish, special consideration will be given to items that can be used to decorate a feast hall, an encampment, a pavilion. Items such as banners, tapestries, table coverings, floor coverings, seating, lamps, lanterns, candle sticks, candles, and so on, will score highly in the competition. Lord Gwillim Kynith will provide several PVC frames from which things can be hung, but if your entry is particularly heavy, please be prepared to provide appropriate means to display it. Let’s put our artistic skills together and Deck the Halls!
So, make ready your Arts and Sciences projects to display! Don your shiniest armor! Prepare to parry and thrust, thrust and parry! Join us in making merry and breaking up the long winter doldrums Endewearde Style!
There will also be children’s activities planned, with a special project in mind. Held for the first time at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor, we offer in your entrance fee a lovely dayboard. In the evening, we will host a feast in Mediterranean style! Please bring your feast gear (plates, bowls, silverware, a drinking vessel, candles, tablecloths, etc.)! This is a larger venue, with several bathrooms, a large vestry, feast hall, and sanctuary.

Bringing Minors As Guests
Please read the policy on Bringing Guest Minors if you are bringing children who are not your own to this SCA event. You must plan ahead to have appropriate notarized documents with you to present as you register for the day.
Whether you are an experienced SCAdian visiting our new site or this is one of your first SCA events, here are a collection of newcomer tips you may find helpful.
Keep a Safe Perimeter Around Tournament Lists: Please keep a respectful distance between you and the list ropes that mark the combat areas – combatants are permitted to retreat backwards right up to the rope lines as they fight. Toddlers are particularly agile and able to dart under the list ropes while you blink – please keep your children safe by asking them to respect these boundaries.
Photography Tips: Photography is permitted but please turn off the flash feature on your camera. If your camera has a high speed capture setting you may wish to use that to capture some outstanding action shoot mid-strike during tournaments.
There’s a Facebook Event for this? Yes! Please check the Tourney of Love Facebook group for the latest updates at https://www.facebook.com/events/227842280709793/
Guests under 18 years old: If you are planning to bring a guest youth under the age of 18 years old please read carefully the policy on the Requirements for Guest Minors below.
You are required to provide documentation for any youth guests and must supervise them throughout their visit.
Dayboard & Evening Feast: Please don’t forget to bring your own feast ware. Food for a light but nourishing lunch (called “dayboard” in the SCA) is included in the price of admission for this event. The evening feast is a separate expense and must be reserved & prepaid by postal mail no later than February 8, 2014. You may want to consider bringing extra feastware so you have something clean for the evening meal – access to dish washing on site may be limited.
Advice for the Evening Feast: Bring a tablecloth and your feast gear (plates, bowls, cups, silverware), and if you have candles, bring those too. It is helpful to bring a plastic bag or two for dirty dishes to gather your feast gear at the end of the day. You will sign up for your table when you arrive at gate.
You can borrow garb: Gold key garb is available in advance through Lord Finan, but only if you make arrangements in advance. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to ask for garb – please remember to provide your usual size (though some tunics are cut for a very loose and should fit sizes S-XL).
Tournaments: The fencing tournament begins PROMPTLY at 12:00 noon. (As in, the first round robin list of 8 will be announced at noon and the tournament will commence immediately after that announcement.) All combatants should be registered at the list table by 11:30 AM.
Arts & Sciences: A&S entries should be placed on the tables provided as soon as possible. Please sign in your A&S entry so I know who belongs to what beautiful thing! Performance entries need to register with the autocrat. Performance entries will take place between the fencing and fighting portions of the tournament.
Voting tokens will be given to the populace after the performers have performed and prior to the heavy list fighting. Voting will take place during the heavy list tournament.
The Champeen O’Love title: You can participate in any one, two, or three sections of the tournament (Fencing, Fighting, Arts & Sciences). Only those entering in all three will be candidates for “Champeen O’ Love.” There are prizes for the winners of Arts & Sciences, Fencing, Fighting, and for the overall winner of the tournament. No one will be leaving with more than one tourney prize.
Where Can I Learn More Newcomer Tips? If you are new and attending your first few SCA events please click here to refer to the collection of Newcomer Information articles linked from the Endewearde website.
Please contact our Newcomer coordinator, Lord Finan, for assistance in understanding what to bring for your comfort to an SCA event, what to pack for dayboard and evening feast, and to make arrangements to borrow appropriate clothing (called “garb”) for an event. Email: email@example.com and mention that you would like to learn more about attending your first SCA event.
Endewearde Sponsorship Program
The Endewearde First SCA Event Sponsorship Program is designed to help welcome potential or new SCA members to their first event by defraying some of the cost. Any current paid member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), may sponsor one other person allowing that person to receive free admission to their first SCA event held by the Barony of Endewearde. This program requires that the SCA member’s sponsored guest never have attended any SCA event before. Its goal is to allow paid members to introduce others to the SCA by accompanying them to an event, while permitting the guest to see what we’re all about and what it is that we do without incurring the costs of the event fee and the Non Member Surcharge (NMS). The following conditions apply:
1. Any paid member of the SCA can sponsor ONE guest and get them into their first SCA event in Endewearde with no fees. Remember, it’s one for one. (A single SCAdian member certainly can bring a whole new family as guests, but under the sponsorship program, only one of those guests gets their site fee and NMS waived.)
2. The paid SCA member acting as sponsor must accompany their guest through Troll / Check in Gate.
3. The paid SCA member acting as sponsor must garb their guest (either by making arrangements for Gold Key garb or with their own or someone else’s garb).
4. This program does NOT waive separate feast or dayboard fees. It only applies to admission fees.
5. It’s up to the SCA member and their guest to verify that this is, in fact, their guest’s first SCA event.
Newcomer Tip: If you are attending your first SCA event (ever) and would like to be matched with a potential sponsor, please contact Lord Finan at firstname.lastname@example.org There is no guarantee that he will be able to match you with an experienced SCA member, but sometimes it is easier to know that you can have a few people to hang out with when you are brand new in the SCA.
