The Barony of Endewearde invites you to join us in showing off all that the SCA has to offer in what has become one of Maine’s largest medieval demos, The Thirteenth Annual Demo at Fort Knox, Saturday, September 6th, 2014.

Feel your soul stir as you stand on the granite ramparts of the historic Fort Knox, overlooking the Penobscot River. Last year’s demo gave hundreds of visitors a taste of the Middle Ages. Attendees will witness demonstrations of a Pas d’Arms for heavy list, fencing, youth fighting and youth fencing, thrown weapons, combat archery, live music, dance, A&S exhibits and don’t forget the fashion show!

DSC02579 towerSo bring your fanciest garb and best song, armor and weapons or lutes and looms and join in the festivities. Performers of all kinds are welcome – we will find you a place to perform as much or as little as you wish! Please contact the event steward if you’re interested in performing or presenting. Because this site provides panoramic views of the Penobscot River and the day-long demo has an event-like feel, we hope many SCAdians will add our demo to their fall calendars. Since we have visitors from all over the state, and sometimes all over New England, Chatelaines from other regions are invited not only to attend, but also to display materials at Information Point. This is a great recruiting opportunity and a wonderful event for new SCAdians! There is no fee <for SCA volunteers working at this demo> to attend, just inform the gatekeeper that you are part of the SCA demo. Please follow the parking rules. You will need to check in at the information point for your meal token, or you will not be able to get lunch. Picnic areas are available for general use. The site is dry. We suggest that you bring a chair, flashlight, and warm cloak no matter how warm it is; the granite fort can be chilly even in warm weather. The event will be held rain-or-shine!

Site Opens: 8:00 AM for SCA Volunteers; 10:00 a.m. for the General Public
Site Closes: 5:00 PM for everyone

WhiteGateThe Friends of Fort Knox have graciously waived park entrance fees for SCA volunteers participating in the medieval tournament. Please have your garb at hand and tell the park ranger at the white entrance booth that you are a SCA volunteer.

Separate admission fees apply for anyone wishing to visit the Observatory.

Please use the Fort’s main parking area for loading/unloading only. A limited number of vehicles may be permitted onto the main site for load in – contact the Event Steward if you need to bring items directly on site. If you can carry supplies into the fort, after entering the parking lot you can turn left to drop off your gear at the circle near the Visitor Center (red brick building). After loading/unloading, SCA volunteers will be asked to move their vehicles to another lot to free up space for visitors. There is a shuttle van to bring visitors to and from the satellite lots.

Inside the fort grounds SCA volunteers must sign in at the SCA gate table (troll) / Information Table to complete SCA waivers.

From all points via I-95.

Get to Bangor via I-95; take Brewer exit 182A (182B from the North). Take exit 4 toward Route 15; stay to the left of the Y, and take a left at the lights. Follow Route 15 for apx. 17.5 miles. You will enter Bucksport and go through the downtown/main street. Turn right onto Bridge Street (it’s a bridge, so it’s hard to miss) and travel .9 miles on ME-3/US-1. You will go over a large bridge – you will see the fort from the bridge to your right. After crossing the bridge, take a right at Fort Knox Road/ME-174 E. You will see the Fort parking area.

  • Facilities & Handicap Accessibility: There are handicap accessible flush toilets and drinking water fountains  located in a separate white building near the Gift Shop & Visitor Center. There are no shower facilities. The fort has limited handicap accessibility to the central courtyard area via a ramp through the main gates. Some parts of the fort will not be readily accessible without minor assistance – please do not hesitate to ask for help. The Gift Shop & Visitor Center will be open.

  • Clothing: To create a medieval atmosphere for the Fort Knox Medieval Tournament demo for the pleasure of the general public, please wear pre-17th century clothing. Please contact your local SCA Chatelaine or members of your local SCA group if you need assistance finding appropriate garb for the day.

  • SCA Volunteer Information & Dayboard: SCA volunteers must check in at the Information Table to sign a roster waiver sheet, just as they do at official SCA events and practices.

This year dayboard will be limited to guest SCA volunteers traveling from outside our barony. Residents of the Barony of Endewearde and its’ Cantons are asked to please bring their own lunch. As is our custom in the SCA, it is expected that you will bring your own sturdy bowl, plate, drinking cup, utensils and napkins. If you are partaking in dayboard, please plan to bring a bowl that makes it easy for you to carry hot soup once served. There are no facilities to wash dishes after use so you may want to bring a plastic bag to store your dishware after lunch. The Barony of Endewearde and the Fort Knox staff would deeply appreciate that you do not wash dishes or dump food waste in the public restrooms. One useful stragegy is to bring a paper plate to place over your sturdier plate; the paper plate is discarded after your meal and you pack out a relatively clean plate.

  • Keep Warm, Be Comfortable: You will want to wear footwear meant for walking, fencing or fighting on gravel, dirt & wood floors, or granite flooring. You may wish to consider bringing a warm cloak  — although the temperatures may be pleasantly warm during the day of the demo, the wind off the Penobscot river can be quite chilly in early September.

  • Site Information: The Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory website link at has additional information about the history of the fort as well as a downloadable brochure (pdf format). Separate admission fees are charged for entrance to the Park and to the Observatory.
