Medieval Tournament at Fort Knox is on hiatus for 2017

The Endewearde Hunt: Friday – Monday, October 6-9, 2017

EVENT DESCRIPTION

The forests of Endewearde are vast and with Autumn upon us, the gentles gather together in the hollow to seek out friendship, knowledge, skill and fame. The Endewearde Hunt boasts all of these things and more. The maples and oaks watch over as a new Baronial Archery and Thrown Weapons Champions are sought through displays of prowess. Under the pines, people gather to learn arts and sciences from others. Their Excellencies watch over the populace with love and admiration. Joyous days are had by all.

Endewearde’s premier camping event takes place in Newburgh, Maine and will be filled with archery and thrown weapons competitions, the famous Woods Walk, a potables round table, a vast A&S track, and more! There is some rumor of a bit of fencing, as well!

This year will also feature the Second Annual Malweardian Naval Battle. Prepare your small siege weapons to attack the floating boats on the pond. More details will be released closer to the event itself.

A sausage fundraiser will take place on Friday evening for a nominal fee.

There will be no Saturday dayboard planned. Instead, Saturday evening will play host to a potluck of vast proportions. If you wish to participate, please bring a dish to share and remember your feast gear. All kinds of dishes welcome!

The site offers primitive camping and above ground fire pits are welcome! Dogs are also permitted, but must remain on a lead at all times. The location has no running water, so please plan accordingly. Port-o-Castles will be located throughout the site for your convenience.

If you are interested in teaching a class for the Arts & Sciences track, a fillable form will be available closer to the event.

Merchants are welcome, as always, but must contact the autocrat. Priority space will be given in order to those who contact the autocrat.

NOTES ABOUT THE SITE

Trash: There are no trash receptacles on site. Please plan to pack out your own trash.

Drinking Water: This is a primitive site. There is no potable water available. There is no running water available for washing or bathing. Please plan to bring whatever water you need for the duration of your stay.

Handicap Accessibility: You should be able to drive a car down into the camping areas to unload and unpack. There are some minor hills but most of the main areas are accessible if a person can traverse a minor slope with a lawn surface.

A WORD FROM THE FORESTERS OF ENDEWEARDE

There will be 9 red fire buckets in visible locations throughout the site. They will be filled with pond water to be used for extinguishing your campfires. Please feel free to use the bucket and return it to where you found it. The Foresters will take on the responsibility of refilling them throughout the weekend.

Reminder: These buckets are filled with pond water, not potable water. Please don’t drink it.

Activity Details

Malweardian Naval Battle
Baroness Margaret of Rochester

“Once again, the combined forces from Endewearde, Malagentia, Hadchester, and foreign defenders will be used to repel a Mighty Naval Armada from our pond!

This year, due to safety considerations, we will NOT include target or combat archery methods. Table top trebuchets, old fashioned pitching arms, and other similarly ranged/weighted methods will be welcomed to defend our homeland. For the sake of the peaceful living wildlife in the pond, we ask that all ammunition be biodegradable.”

Arts & Sciences Coordinator: Frouva [Lady] Halldís Ulfsdottier

Frova Halldis Ulfsdottier presents to you a challenge! Along with our traditional display of all the beautiful things made by our populace, this year there will be a little twist. The challenge shall be: Broaden Your Horizons.

What this means is that we are not looking for master works. Everyone, both new and vetted, is encouraged to step outside of their comfort zone and try something they have never done before. The sky is the limit!

There will be four categories, and a winner for each category. The categories will be:

  • fiber arts
  • metal/woodworking
  • scribal
  • miscellaneous (to include, but not be limited to, food and beverage entries).

A populace vote will determine the challenge winners. Documentation will not be of the typical variety for this challenge. Instead of mountains of research and references, you will only need to answer a few simple questions (i.e. why you chose the medium you did, how you made it, what you would do differently, and if you will continue to explore this new art).

You can download the Arts & Sciences entry form to print out and fill out in advance or you may pick up a form at the event.

If you aren’t watching the youth combat or adult heavy weapons or rapier combat tournaments or examining the Arts & Sciences entries please join us and hang out in the Tavern gathering room. Bring a comfy chair and your picnic lunch, sit by the fire, and just hang out. Entertainments in the tavern are self directed  so feel free to bring tavern board games or to entertain others with song, dance and storytelling in a relaxed atmosphere. You are welcome to bring your craft projects as well.

Additional Site Information
  • Pets: Pets (on a leash 4 feet or shorter) are welcome throughout the Fort, the Fort grounds, and the Visitor’s Center.  Pets are not allowed in the Penobscot Narrows Observatory and may not be left in a car unattended.

  • Parking: There is free parking. Please park in the paved lot and walk your items down to the front gates of the fort. There is a convenient traffic circle near the Visitor Center & Restrooms to drop off your stuff and then park your vehicle.

  • Facilities & Handicap Accessibility: There are handicap accessible flush toilets located in a separate white building near the Gift Shop & Visitor Center. There are no shower facilities. The unpaved road around the front of Fort Knox is a combination of packed dirt and loose gravel. The fort has limited handicap accessibility to the central courtyard area via a ramp through the main gates. Some parts of the fort will not be readily accessible without minor assistance – please do not hesitate to ask for help. The Gift Shop & Visitor Center next to the restrooms will not be open.

  • Paperwork Is Required For Guest Minors: If you are bringing Minors (youth under 18 years old) who are not your own children or for whom you do not have legal guardianship then you MUST have the Minor Consent To Participate And Hold Harmless waiver document signed for each child by their parent/legal guardian and brought with you to present at the SCA check-in gate. This policy applies to relatives of the guest minor as well (siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins). Please download this form:
    http://www.sca.org/docs/pdf/chldwaiv.pdf

Any minor not in the company of their parent or legal guardian at any SCA event must have in their possession the following form, Medical Authorization for Minors, which has been completed by their parents before the event AND witnessed by a Notary Public. The person responsible for the Minor that day should also have a Medical Authorization for Minors form in their care for the duration of the SCA event:
    http://www.sca.org/docs/pdf/treatminor-notary.pdf

You can read Endewearde’s FAQ for Guest Minors so you can plan to obtain the necessary forms, signatures and notary public services before the youth guest minor accompanies you to a SCA event.

  • Clothing: An attempt at pre-17th century clothing is required to attend any SCA event. If you are new to attending SCA events then you need to know that all SCA event participants wear clothing that is suitable for the SCA period (approximately 600 – 1600).

Please contact our Newcomer coordinator, Lord Eoin (his name is prounounced as “Owen”), ahead of time to make arrangements to borrow appropriate clothing (called “garb”). Loaner clothing will be available at the event. Endewearde has simple and comfortable selection of loaner clothing in a wide variety of sizes to help you attend our SCA events. You can send email to Lord Eoin at chatelaine@endewearde.eastkingdom.org if you have any questions about attending a SCA event or need to borrow garb for the day.

Please return the clothing you borrowed before you leave the event site. We’ll take care of laundering it.

  • No Dayboard Will Be Served: There will no dayboard (lunch) served at this event nor is there a food vendor on site. Please plan to pack your own lunch and beverages.

For those new to attending SCA events, it is the custom to expect attendees will plan to bring their own sturdy bowl, plate, drinking cup, utensils and napkins. It is recommended you bring a plastic bag to store your dishware after lunch as there won’t be access to sinks to rinse them off.  (We and the Fort Knox staff would deeply appreciate that you do not wash dishes or dump food waste in the public restrooms). One useful tip is to bring a paper plate to place over your sturdier plate; the paper plate is discarded after your meal and you get to bring home a relatively clean plate.

  • Keep Warm, Be Comfortable: You will want to wear footwear meant for walking, fencing or fighting on gravel, dirt floors, or granite flooring. There is plenty of room for fencing and fighting in the gun bays on the stone and gravel flooring inside the fort. Please consider bringing a warm cloak or coat — although the temperatures may be pleasantly warm on the day of the event, the wind off the Penobscot river can be quite chilly in late April. Please bring a folding chair and a water bottle for your own comfort.

  • Fort Knox Site Information: The Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory website link at http://fortknox.maineguide.com/ has additional information about the history of the fort as well as a downloadable brochure (pdf format). Park and observatory admission fees are in effect once the park  opens to the general public. Prior to that date the grounds outside the fort are open to the general public.

Follow Jehan Event Details On Social Media

You can follow conversations and additional information about this event on the social media facebook page Jehan’s Fencing and Fighting at the Fort.

Announcements for this event appear on the East Kingdom Event Calendar under the title Jehan’s Fencing and Fighting at the Fort on April 29, 2017.
