Block Printing Workshop: Saturday, February 18, 2017

The block printing workshop originally scheduled to be held on Sunday, February 12, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Bangor Housing Authority, 161 Davis Road, Bangor, Maine, will now be held at the Tourney of Love event in Bangor, Maine. Start time will be 1:30 pm with the class expected to run for at least 2 hours. Please read the basic information you will need to prepare for the workshop (see below). Participants should bring an old towel and a scrap of fabric to print that is large enough to make a pouch or pillow with.

Updated: Feb. 16, 2017

Block Printing Workshop Description

In this workshop participants can learn period and modern techniques for carving pattern blocks and applying the designs onto fabric.

Here is a brief list of materials needed for the workshop:

  • Fabric to print on, plain woven linen, silk and cotton are good choices.
  • A block to print with, either linoleum or wooden.
  • Something to pad your printing surface with, an old towel works well.
  • Paint, there are specialty block printing inks that work well, but some people swear by simple house paint and of course there are period options to explore.

Alternatively there are many fine suppliers of lino carving supplies or you can just buy (or make) a wooden block. Olla will be bringing a limited amount of all of these things for people to use to the workshop but cannot guarantee there will be an adequate amount depending on the number of people attending the workshop.

You can follow discussions about this workshop on the public facebook event page Block Printing Workshop. Olalla Tristana is organizing this workshop.
