Site Preparation – Endewearde Hunt (Newburgh, Maine): Saturday, September 2, 2017

Manuscript image of person directing workers.

Venue: 2910 Western Ave, Newburgh, ME

We know that Labor Day weekend often makes it difficult to balance family and hobby weekend plans. With the Endewearde fall events coming up, however, this was the most reasonable day to get stuff done on at the event site before the Endewearde Baronial Armored Combat Championship and Endewearde Hunt events in September and October.

We will meet on site at 9:30 AM. Please bring your work gloves and any tools you may have. There is much work to be done! A couple of trees have fallen and another tree is in poor shape and should be pulled down. If you have an open trailer we can haul brush with, please consider bringing it.

Please bring your lunch. We can start up the fire pit if needed.

Also remember there will be no bathrooms on site, so bring a roll of toilet paper!

Remember many hands make light work, the more the merrier!

Beautiful Maine weather & Lots of Fun SCA Opportunities

Illuminated manuscript image of two women upon a blue sky background comprised of concentric circles of varying shades of blue. The women are encircled by yellow stars around the outer edge of the sky. A gray crescent moon and a yellow sun are in the upper portion of the blue sky. Portions of calligraphy text appear on the top and bottom of this image.Mother Nature has finally relented with her offering of daily rain and is showing her sunny side this week. There are several opportunities to gather with SCA friends as follows:

Tuesdays in Bangor: Archery practice in Bangor at Master Godric and Baroness Margaret’s home. Practice starts at 5:30 pm and continues until sunset. Bring your own bug spray, chair, and water bottle. Don’t know how to shoot archery yet? Show up and take lessons.

Wednesdays in Hermon: Thrown Weapons practice in Hermon at Lord Seamus’s home. Practice starts at 5:30 pm. Bring your own bug spray, folding chair and water bottle. Learn how to fling that thing [marshal approved, of course] across the thrown weapons range to hit the target.

Wednesday in Washington County, Maine: SCA Project Night in Machias. The UMaine Machias campus is on summer hours so the gym may not be available for extended time as it is during the academic year. Contact the Machias area members of Sios Thoir via facebook for the most current information regarding where and when SCA Project Night meetings will be held.

Thursdays: Lord Gwillim and Lady Constancia hold Medieval Dance practice and Sing Thing on alternative weeks.

Medieval Dance is held at the Orono High School Cafeteria, 15 Goodridge Drive, Orono on May 18, June 1, June 15, and possibly June 29. Dance practice runs from 7:00-8:30 pm. Wear comfy shoes and bring your own water bottle. Instruction is offered for each dance. Experienced dancers pair up with new dancers to help them through the movements. This is a free activity.

Sing Thing is held at the home of Lord Gwillim and Lady Constancia in Orrington. Upcoming sessions are planned for May 25, June 8, and June 22. Sing Thing starts at 7:30 pm and runs until 9:30. Group songs are taught to new singers.

Saturday: On May 20th there are several excellent opportunities to partake in SCA activities.

There will be a Garbed Forest Walk along Acadia National Park’s beautiful walkways. The walk starts at Noon at the Eagle Lake Carriage Road and takes about 3 hours to complete the loop. You can follow discussions about this planned hike on social media on the public facebook event page Garbed Forest Walk.

There will be a Queen’s Favor Making Workshop at the home of Baroness Margaret of Rochester in Bangor, Maine. There will be supplies provided to embroider and paint favors (your preference). The traditional snack for Queen’s Favor Making in Endewearde is mead and cheesecake. Baroness Margaret will have that, though other delights are encouraged. Master Godric of Hamtun will make breakfast for early arriving folks at 10:00 AM. The full on favor making will begin at noon and continue throughout the afternoon.

Our northern neighbors in the Shire of Lyndhaven (New Brunswick, Canada) are hosting their annual Middleground SCA event (read the official announcement). There is a public facebook event Middleground VIII – Cake vs Pie that has a discussion area for those who want to learn more details about this event. If you are new to the SCA please bear in mind that you will need to wear garb for any official SCA event (like this one). In addition you will need to have a passport to enter/exit Canada.

Our southern neighbors in the Riding of Giggleswick are holding Giggleswick’s Garden of Arts and Sciences (read the official announcement). There is a public facebook page called Gigglewick’s Garden of Arts and Sciences for this event that discusses what classes are being planned and other information you need to know to attend.

Sunday: Endewearde’s weekly Combat Practice will be held at the Bangor Housing Authority gym, 161 Davis Road, Bangor, Maine. Practice starts at 4 pm and runs until 7 pm. Adult heavy list and rapier combat runs every week; Youth combat is running on a pre-set schedule (see the Endewearde Master Calendar for meeting dates). Youth fencing is offered as well.

In addition to combat practices running on Sundays there is also a group of artisans who bring their craft projects along and meet in the kitchen area or outside. You are welcome to join them and discover an amazing variety of historic craftsman techniques being practiced in the Barony of Endewearde.

Please check the Endewearde Master Calendar for a quick overview of what’s coming up each week in the barony. Special workshops, activities and official events are listed on the main menu of the websites of the Barony of Endewearde, Canton of Wyndriche (incipient) and the Canton of Basingestoches. You can follow general discussions and find out about last minute cancellations and other trivia on the Barony of Endewearde facebook group.

Sing Thing: Thursday, February 2, 2017

Duke and ladies in a garden (Miniature)

Another rousing session of Sing Thing will be held on Thursday, February 2nd, 7:30-9:30 PM, at the home of Lord Gwillim & Lady Constancia in Orrington, Maine.

For those of you who haven’t been in the past, Sing Thing is just an opportunity for people who like music, particularly singing, to sit around a table and learn some stuff together. We do a mix of filk, SCA-original, and period pieces. There’s no “talent” required; nobody’s judgy; the only expectation is that you come ready to sing and have fun. And you might want to bring a binder to hold all the great music!
